Western Roar Netball Club are delighted to announce the following coaching appointments for the 2020 Gold Industry Group Western Australian Netball League.

After 5 years at the helm of the Open team, Andrea McCulloch will step down from the role and Western Roar has appointed Stuart Dent, the State Under 19’s Coach for the past two years, as her replacement. Dylan McPherson has accepted an appointment as Assistant Coach.

McCulloch will be retained by Western Roar as the Head Coach of the Western Roar Netball program and will oversee the development of players across the Open, Mens and 20U teams, as well as the development of the coaching staff.

McCulloch said of the change, “I am incredibly honoured and excited to be a part of the new coaching structure at Western Roar in 2020 and thank the Board for supporting this new vision for the Club. I’m looking forward to being able to devote more time to the high-performance aspects of our Club to ensure it continues to grow and develop and to ensure that we remain a powerhouse in the competition. I know that I am leaving the day to day Open coaching duties in the very capable hands of Stuart and Dylan, two of the best coaches in WA”.

McCulloch has had marvellous success as the Open coach and, following on from a 2015 Premiership, she will this year lead the Open team to their third successive finals campaign after their second consecutive top two finish. Western Roar thank Andrea for the time and dedication she has given to the role. Western Roar are grateful not only for her technical skills and expertise, but also the passion she has shown in her time in the role.

Andrea McCulloch – Head Coach for Western Roar in 2020

Her replacement, Dent, is one of the up and coming coaches within the Netball WA coaching pathway. Having come through the coaching ranks at Perth Lions as Reserves Head Coach for 2 years, to his current role as Assistant with the Open team; Dent’s previous appointments with the State 19’s team are a testament to his incredible technical and strategic knowledge as well as his understanding of the game, having played himself at the highest level.

Stuart Dent – newly appointed 2020 Western Roar Open Coach

Dent said he was very excited about the prospect of the 2020 season. He said “I’d like to acknowledge the work that Andrea has done at Western Roar/Perth Lions for a number of years and it’s great to have her continue as Head Coach of the broader coaching program. To be able to have her experience and knowledge within our inner sanctum is a huge asset, and to retain Dylan as the Assistant Coach means we will continue to drive the excellence from our players that we demand. I’m really focused on continuing Western Roar’s history, from Perth Lions and Perth Bullets, which is full of success, but also full of producing elite athletes for the Netball WA pathways. It’s really important for us that we continue to work towards developing our players and sustain the on-court success that we expect from our proud Club”.

McPherson, a current National and State Mens player will next year commence his third season with Perth Lions/Western Roar and is excited about the prospect of the 2020 changes. He said “Andrea has done a fantastic job. The state of the Club right now is a reflection of the reputation that she has built at the Club and I have learnt a huge amount from her. That said, I am a big believer in the benefit of fresh eyes and fresh ideas coming in and I have massive respect for Stu and what he can do. He is one of the most gifted netballers I have seen, man or woman, and I think his knowledge of the game, technical skills and his ability to relate that to players is almost unparalleled. I can’t wait to finish off 2019 with some great results and a great bunch of athletes and then get going for 2020”.

Dylan McPherson – continues as Western Roar Open Assistant Coach in 2020

Western Roar are thrilled to have their three Open coaches back on board for 2020. President, Simone Pirie, said she was “excited for the future of our Club with such an experienced, passionate and innovative coaching group at the helm of Western Roar. Andrea is an incredibly loyal club person who has worked tirelessly to get us to the strong position we are in today and Stu will bring a fresh perspective and new directions to the Club. With the assistance of talented up and comer Dylan, they form a formidable group who will drive Western Roar into a new era”.

Join Western Roar in congratulating Stuart, Andrea and Dylan. Further coaching announcements will be made in due course.
